Since its origins in New York City in September of 2009, the "A Book About Death" exhibit has grown into an internationally exhibited arts phenomenon. Matthew Rose, who created the concept of the first show, invited artists from all over the world to submit 500 postcards, which were then shown at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery in SoHo, and which viewers were invited to collect to create their own unbound Book About Death.
ABAD, as the show is known, was originally created by artist Ray Johnson (1927-1995) as an irreverential look at the subject of death, and the original unbound edition was sent to members of the New York Correspondence School, a network of international artists and poets founded by Johnson in the 1960's who used the democratic and inexpensive mail system to distribute and exchange works of art. With Johnson's original concept in mind, artist Matthew Rose sent a call for entry through the network of today's technology and created the NYC ABAD.
Now ABAD is coming to the northeast. The historic Belknap Mill, located in the heart of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, is exhibiting selections from the original New York City Book, and inviting artists to submit work to create a new chapter in the Book About Death.
