Seed Bead Sow
Creative Expressions Project
The program is coordinated by Seattle University Criminal Justice professor/chair Jacqueline Helfgott and co-facilitated by local artist Kathleen McHugh
The Seed Bead Sow is the fifth piece of public art the group of inmates has donated to Seattle programs. Creative Expressions has completed two Metro bus murals and two murals for the High Point neighborhood's YMCA. One mural is dedicated to children whose fathers are incarcerated. The other was created in memory of a murdered child. -Seattle University News
Creative Expressions At The Washington State Reformatory
Description of the prison art program by Seattle University Professor/Chair of Criminal Justice Jacqueline Helfgott, Creative Expressions founder and program coordinator:
The Creative Expressions Project was founded in 1993 to offer inmates a way to engage in constructive art projects and provide a forum for connections to the outside world. "Many of the prisoners see their art as a way to reach out to the free world," said Helfgott. "Most of these men will be released eventually. We hope that this program keeps them connected to the community in ways that will help narrow the gulf between 'us' and 'them' when they are released," she said. According to Helfgott, many prisoners, regardless of whether they expect to be released, view the public art they create as a way to begin to repay society for the crime they have committed.
